The Pool - 2007

Movie #104

4.5 stars

In this seriocomic study of class differences in India, a young hotel worker becomes obsessed with a swimming pool at an opulent mansion in Panjom, Goa. His life takes a wild turn when he meets the mysterious family that arrives at the house.

Cast: Jhangir Badshah, Venkatesh Chavan, Ayesha Mohan, Nana Patekar

Director: Chris Smith

Hindi, Subtitled. Filmed in Goa, India

The movie is so simple that its brilliant. The viewer connects to the main character by simply viewing his everyday routine. Whether it is cleaning a hotel room or selling plastic bags in the street, the viewer gains insight into his life. Even though the film's plot may seem simple, the message is not as easy to understand. Yes, after watching the film you will know the moral of the story...but the question is...would you do the same thing?

Overall recommendation: you gotta watch it :)

Trivia (courtesy of imdb):
The makers did not intend the movie to be in Hindi. However, when they began casting, director Chris Smith claimed that most of the promising actors did not speak English.
